The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a massive recall of children’s jewelry containing the metal cadmium. The first recalled produce is a “Best of Friends” charm bracelet sold exclusively at Claire’s. The annoucement hinted that several additional recalls were imminent. Apparently all of the cadmium based jewelry was manufactured in China by Dae Yeon Industries Corp.
Cadmium is a soft, white-silverish metal that can be easily mixed with Zinc and Mercury. It is a known carcinogen, is extremely toxic even at low levels, and has absolutely no reason to be in your body at any level. Ingestion can result in cadmium poisoning.
In recent years several Chinese made products have come under scrutiny, including the massive “Chinese drywall litigation” pending as an MDL in federal district court in New Orleans, and tained pet food.
The charm bracelets should be returned to Claire’s for an immediate refund. If the jewelry is ingested, call poison control immediately.
